The Cartier Must de Cartier Eau de Toilette Refillable Bottle is a rare surviving example from 1981, the year Cartier introduced Must de Cartier as the Maison’s first fragrance. More than a conventional perfume bottle, this presentation reflects Cartier’s early approach to fragrance as a lasting luxury object, with the perfume housed inside a refillable decorative case intended to be kept rather than discarded.

The 30ml bottle is presented within an architectural red and silver-tone outer case, combining deep Cartier red panels with polished metal detailing. Inside sits the removable dark glass flacon, marked “Eau de Toilette, Must de Cartier Paris, 89% vol.”, which retains the original 1981 Must de Cartier fragrance inside. The removable fitted cover follows the same red and polished-metal treatment, creating a compact object that feels closer to a Cartier accessory than traditional fragrance packaging.

The original user guide accompanying the piece explains Cartier’s concept of the refillable bottle, describing these decorative flacons as objects designed to be retained and replenished through replaceable perfume refills. The guide also illustrates the removal and replacement mechanism of the internal bottle, reinforcing the unusual sophistication of the original design.

This example is offered as a particularly complete 1981 full set, accompanied by its original external red carton, fitted red Cartier presentation box and original multilingual user guide. The outer packaging is marked Ref. 69415130, while the presentation case is finished internally in cream and signed “Parfums Cartier Paris” in gold.

The bottle itself remains in excellent preserved vintage condition, especially notable given its age and the delicate polished surfaces of the casing. The external packaging shows appropriate signs of age and long-term storage, while the internal presentation box, fragrance bottle and accompanying literature have been preserved remarkably well.

Dating to the very beginning of Cartier’s fragrance history, this 1981 Must de Cartier represents an important early expression of the Maison beyond jewellery and watches. With its original fragrance still present, complete period packaging and distinctive refillable construction, it is an exceptionally rare Cartier collectible and a compelling surviving example of the original Must de Cartier era.
