Cartier Mini Diabolo “Tiger Claws” Ballpoint Pen (Ref. ST180103)

The Cartier Mini Diabolo “Tiger Claws” is one of the more unusual decorative interpretations of the Maison’s Diabolo writing instruments, distinguished by a striking striped motif that gives the otherwise compact and elegant form considerably more character.

Reference ST180103 combines a glossy black body with a richly decorated cap featuring sweeping black lacquered lines over a pink-gold-plated surface, creating the “Tiger Claws” pattern from which the model takes its name. Period Cartier product wording described the model as a Mini Diabolo ballpoint with tiger-claw decoration, black composite and lacquer, and pink-gold plating.

The cap retains several of the design cues that make the Diabolo family immediately recognisable: a slender Cartier clip, rounded architectural detailing and, at the very top, the small red cabochon that provides a subtle flash of colour against the black and warm gold tones. The lower barrel is deliberately much simpler, finished in polished black and allowing the elaborate decoration of the cap to remain the visual focus.

Its miniature proportions are also part of the appeal. Rather than being a conventional full-size Cartier writing instrument, the Mini Diabolo was conceived as a more compact and jewellery-like object, sitting somewhere between a functional everyday pen and a small luxury accessory. The result is particularly effective with the Tiger Claws decoration, where the scale makes the intricate striped finish appear almost ornamental.

The reference can be documented in Cartier-related commercial records from at least 2010, where ST180103 appears specifically as the Mini Diabolo ballpoint with “Tiger Claws” decoration. The design has since disappeared from Cartier’s current writing-instrument catalogue, and surviving complete examples are considerably less common than the standard black or plain-metal Diabolo models.

This particular example has been exceptionally well preserved. The pen presents in like-new condition, showing only very minor hairlines consistent with careful storage and occasional handling rather than regular use. The decorative surfaces, clip and red cabochon remain especially attractive.

Importantly, it is accompanied by its original Cartier red presentation box, outer white box and papers, making it a particularly appealing surviving set for a collector of discontinued Cartier writing instruments. The outer packaging itself shows some storage wear consistent with age, while the pen remains remarkably well preserved.
